Late in the summer of 2014, I was walking down Clark Street thinking about possibilities. I had a perfectly good job at a place I love, doing work I’m...

Why Are We Doing This?

October 5, 2015

For as long as I can remember, I've been interested in what makes people tick.

In college I was drawn to social activism. We live in a very large world with over lapping problems that extend beyond the reach of the individual person. "Thoughts become things" doesn't exactly work for racism and classism and sexism and homophobia and all the other 'isms. All we as individuals can really do is focus on how we react to it and try our best to be that change we want to see in the world. And hopefully not end up perpetuating that oppression in our own lives, especially against ourselves.

I started reading tarot in high school. I don't remember what made me pick up my first deck. I know it was at a Barnes & Noble. I think I just grabbed it and bought it and took it home and dived in and never looked back. It was pure impulse. Then, I started reading for friends and remained "on book" for years. They'd ask a question and I'd lay out the cards and then look up what they meant. It wasn't until I met my teachers in 2009 that I learned how to tap into my intuition and stopped looking up the answers. Things exploded after that.

I received Reiki attunements years apart, mainly because it took time for me to save the money to pay for them. I also found out the hard way that attunements via different lineages of Reiki meant different teachings. Some in depth and some woefully inadequate.

In Winter of 2014, I received the Reiki Master Teacher attunement. I remember looking through the manual detailing all the steps I would have to learn to do each attunement on a student and thought, there has to be a simpler way to do this. I completely rejected that level 1, level 2, level 3 model. I also felt that the language and the symbols were an unnecessary barrier (I'm speaking only from my perspective, if you practice reiki and you enjoy it, wonderful. Keep going).

So from there I developed Immersion Energy Healing. It was born out of Reiki and became something else entirely. I suspect this happens for many people when they become master practitioners in Reiki. It's inevitable that it should change and adapt to the person practicing it.

In April of 2015 I realized that I needed my own space to practice my energy modality and create a space for others to learn and develop their own energy modalities. A healer is not created in a weekend workshop and it shouldn't take years to save the money to pay for the training. It starts by first healing yourself and then using what you have learned to heal others. It's a life long journey, not a destination.
